Discover the Power of Parent Involvement

As noted in previous blog post, unlike parent-teacher conferences in one-on-one settings, teachers are asked to provide parents with “snapshots” of their children’s academic performances and behavior observations via E-mail, telephone, or direct parent contact outside of workshop groups. Again, this is to maintain student confidentiality.

The goal is to maintain a consistent dialog with parents, focusing on a weekly disclosure of student academic performance and behavior observations.

At the end of each workshop, elicit feedback from parents regarding their experience. You have already successfully removed several barriers to parent involvement, and you should be in contact with parents, initiated either by you or the parents, at least once per week, whether it is face-to-face, E-mail, text messaging, or telephone.

If the weekly “snapshots” of student academic performance and behavior observations raise concerns, a better-defined partnership with the potential for joint interventions will be formed during these workshops. For example, if homework is not completed or returned to school, the parent can ensure the assignment is completed and returned. Likewise, if students require individual education plan services, workshops can provide an opportunity for teachers and parents to apply joint interventions they might find compelling.
