Resist Complacency

Leaving the task of teaching our children in the hands of schools and teachers limits the role parents can have educating their children. Teachers are passionate and committed artisans and pedagogical experts. They are often overworked and often underpaid, and despite this fact, they continue to produce well-rounded and gifted students.

We entrust them with this weighty responsibility because at the end of the day, we recognize the great job they are doing. Recognizing their great work with a verbal acknowledgment goes a long way. After all, our children’s achievement is a direct result of their teacher’s skills, training, and experience.

This cannot be taken for granted. Complacent and apathetic views of our role in educating our children, as the sole responsibility of teachers misses the point. Schools need our active involvement. They use our information as a resource to address the unique and often complex issues of our children.

Don’t take my word for it. Ask any teacher or principal if they find information shared about your child is beneficial. When they respond with an enthusiastic yes, ask how you can continue sharing information about yourself and your child that could be helpful for student success.

For example, the stressors we experience can affect how our kids manage school and peer-related stress that can be displayed in disruptive behavior and poor academic performance. Resisting complacency means assuming schools and teachers can do it all and that your involvement doesn’t matter. Don’t wait for your child’s school to reach out to you. Resist complacency and become proactive.
